Dr. Pierre Duterte : Doctor of medicine since 1981, Pierre Duterte quickly got involved in the non-profit world: starting in 1994, he worked for the Assocation for Victims of Repression in Exil (AVRE) until 2002.

In 1995, he founded Ballal, a non-profit that came to the aid of deported Mauritanian nationals living in Senegal, and in 1997, he founded Rupture, a non-profit whose mission is to fight against the death penalty and improve prison and detention conditions.

In 1999, he became the president/founder of the Torture Victims Healing Centres Coalition of Latin America (CCVT-EL). From 1998 to 2004, Dr. Duterte taught courses in victimology at the University of Paris-René Descartes. He also worked as a consultant for the European Commission between 2003 and 2005.

In 2001, he and Hélène de Rengervé co-founded Parcours de Jeunes (which would later become Parcours d’Exil). He has been the Chief Medical Director since 2002. Dr. Duterte is also a professional photographer, holding expositions around the globe in cities such as Paris (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007), Miami (2005), and New York (2006)

Finally, in 2007, he published a book describing his experiences treating victims of torture. The book, published by JC Lattès, is entitled Terres Inhumaines (Landscapes of Inhumanity) and is often the subject of Dr. Dutertre’s radio and television appearances.
