The current situation
In 2007, Amnesty International gathered information on 81 of the 192 UN member states concerning acts of torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.
According to International Bridges to Justice, 113 countries practice torture.
According to ACAT (Christians for the Abolition of Torture), torture is used in one out of two countries.
At Parcours d’Exil we have received patients from 74 different countries since 2002... these statistics all speak to the magnitude and scope of the problem!
Since 2001 the United States’ argument that the use of torture can be justified in the context of the war against terrorism has only aggravated the situation. The Association for the Prevention of Torture wrote an interesting paper in which the “Ticking Bomb” scenario (often evoked in the fight against terrorism) is discussed.
